芭蕉布（大倉集古館） Bashofu (Okura Museum of Art)

 

第2次世界大戦後、一度は滅びかけた芭蕉布の伝統を復興して、人間国宝に認定された平良敏子と、その業績を紹介した展覧会。

会場には、芭蕉という植物から芭蕉布を作り上げるための道具、その行程などと合わせて、平良敏子やその工房が織り上げた美しい芭蕉布が展示されていた。

平良敏子は、民藝運動を主導した柳宗悦が芭蕉布の素晴らしさを書いた本を呼んで、その伝統を受け継ぐことを決意したのだという。

芭蕉布の模様は、幾何学的な模様ばかりだと思ったら、中には沖縄の海の波の形や、鳥の形などをデザインしたものもあった。

平良敏子の芭蕉布には沖縄の美しい風景そのものが織り込まれている。

An exhibition that introduces Toshiko Taira, who was recognized as a Living National Treasure by reviving the tradition of Bashofu, which was once destroyed after World War II, and her achievements.

At the venue, a beautiful Basho cloth woven by Toshiko Taira and her workshop was exhibited, along with tools for making Basho cloth from a plant called Basho and her process.

Toshiko Taira said that Soetsu Yanagi, who led the Mingei movement, called a book about the splendor of Bashofu and decided to carry on that tradition.

I thought that the patterns of the basho cloth were all geometric patterns, but some of them designed the shape of the ocean waves in Okinawa and the shape of birds.

The beautiful scenery of Okinawa itself is woven into the basho cloth by Toshiko Taira.
