In Dialog with Nature (National Museum of Western Art)

The first exhibition after the renewal opening of the National Museum of Western Art.

The theme of nature and people was rather rough, and consisted of the collections of the National Museum of Western Art and the Folkwang Museum in Essen, Germany.

In Japan, French Impressionists, Italian Baroque paintings, and Dutch landscape paintings are popular, but German paintings are rarely seen except Dürer and Rubens.

Since the Folkwang Museum is a museum in Germany, I was able to see works of modern German paintings.

A work by Max Liebermann, a representative of the German Impressionists.

Liebermann was elected president of the Prussian Academy of Arts in 1920, but was forced to resign by the Nazis in 1932 because he was Jewish.

He died in 1935, and only a few people, including Kathe Kollwitz, attended his funeral.

A work by Caspar David Friedrich, representative of German Romanticism.

Whether it's a sunset or a sunrise, the natural scenery is drawn, but I feel an indescribable sublime atmosphere and a religious atmosphere.

Work by Danish Johann Christian Clausen Dahl.

During a visit to Dresden, he met Friedrich, and a deep friendship was formed between the two.

Dahl's work is greatly influenced by Friedrich, but it does not feel as fantastical as Friedrich's.

Even so, this work has an elaborate composition in which the scenery is drawn on the other side of the window, and the scenery is reflected on the glass of the window.

Works by Karl Friedrich Schinkel.

Schinkel is an architect who represents German neoclassical architecture, but he also had a wonderful skill in painting.

As an architect, he was a traditional neoclassicist, but as a painter, he painted romantic paintings under the influence of Friedrich.

Gerhard Richter's work is currently on display at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo in Takebashi.

The sky with floating clouds is depicted using the so-called photo painting method.

Although it is a huge work of 3 meters in width and 2 meters in length, it perfectly depicts the subtle colors of the sky and clouds.

In addition, works by familiar painters from the Folkwang Museum were also exhibited. Works by Paul Gauguin, Paul Klee, and Ferdinand Hodler left an impression on me.

The collection of the National Museum of Western Art had many familiar works, but Akseli Gallen-Kallela from Finland caught my eye.

When I visited Finland, I had seen many of Carrera's works, so I felt very nostalgic.

It's a typical Finnish lake landscape, but there's a theory that it might have been drawn after the ship on which the hero of the Finnish national myth "Kalevala" had passed.

Shiomi Mieko + FLUXUS (TOKI-NO-WASUREMONO)

Works by Mieko Shiomi, who was active as a member of Fluxus, and other members of Fluxus were on display. Speaking of people from Fluxus from Japan, the name recognition of Yoko Ono is overwhelming. This was the first time I had seen Mieko Shiomi's work as a whole, but she had many unique works that were on a par with Yoko Ono, and it was worth seeing. Her idea of using the entire world as a stage, sending messages from various places to perform events and sharing the results, is very Fluxus-like. Also unique were t...

A special exhibition of the Makie collection of the Nezu Museum. There are various kinds of crafts in maki-e, but this time, maki-e inkstone cases, sutra boxes, inrō, wedding ceremony items, etc. were on display. The highlight was the gorgeous inkstone case full of important works of art. Scenes sung in ancient and modern waka poetry collections, as well as the natural beauty of Japan, were expressed with amazing techniques using gold powder, and small worlds that never got tired of being seen were drawn on each maki-e inkstone box. The Hanashirakawa Mak...

Yasuyuki "TAIKO" Inoue (Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo)

A retrospective exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Yasuyuki Inoe, a special effects art director of the movie. Inoue was born in Fukuoka in 1922, served as a soldier on the Chinese mainland during World War II, and lost his left foot in battle. After the war, he studied design and design at Nihon University College of Art under Bauhaus graduate Takeshi Yamawaki, and then under the direction of Tsuburaya, he was in charge of special art for the movie Godzilla, and after that he mastered the path. At the venue, storyboards, models, design materials, etc. of the movi...
