Collections from Various Connections (Okura Museum of Art)

A collection exhibition that displays various crafts such as swords, Chinese pottery, Chinese textiles, Thai art, etc.

At the same time, the history of the Okura Shukokan was introduced through materials and photographs.

The Okura family used the enormous wealth they had earned as a conglomerate in modern Japan to purchase works of art, but many of them were lost or damaged in the fires that followed the Great Kanto Earthquake in the Taisho era.

The Okura family once had the largest collection of lacquerware in the world, but most of it was lost in the Great Kanto Earthquake.

Some pieces of lacquerware that survived the disaster were on display, suggesting lost treasures.

In this exhibition, the episodes related to Kihachiro Okura were interesting as well as the exhibits.

Kihachiro Okura was involved in the construction of the Imperial Theater. This led him to become acquainted with Tamisuke Yokogawa, who was also a large collector of Chinese pottery and who designed the Imperial Theater. Yokogawa had considered selling the collection, now owned by the Tokyo National Museum, to the Okura Collection once.

Prince Arisugawa and Okura share a hobby of car lovers, and because of that, the Okura Zaibatsu was contracted to procure weapons and food for the military.

Kihachiro Okura also did a lot of business in China, and because of this relationship, a commemorative photo with Zhang Zuolin, one of the warlords in the Tohoku region, was also on display.

Shiomi Mieko + FLUXUS (TOKI-NO-WASUREMONO)

Works by Mieko Shiomi, who was active as a member of Fluxus, and other members of Fluxus were on display. Speaking of people from Fluxus from Japan, the name recognition of Yoko Ono is overwhelming. This was the first time I had seen Mieko Shiomi's work as a whole, but she had many unique works that were on a par with Yoko Ono, and it was worth seeing. Her idea of using the entire world as a stage, sending messages from various places to perform events and sharing the results, is very Fluxus-like. Also unique were t...

A special exhibition of the Makie collection of the Nezu Museum. There are various kinds of crafts in maki-e, but this time, maki-e inkstone cases, sutra boxes, inrō, wedding ceremony items, etc. were on display. The highlight was the gorgeous inkstone case full of important works of art. Scenes sung in ancient and modern waka poetry collections, as well as the natural beauty of Japan, were expressed with amazing techniques using gold powder, and small worlds that never got tired of being seen were drawn on each maki-e inkstone box. The Hanashirakawa Mak...

Yasuyuki "TAIKO" Inoue (Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo)

A retrospective exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Yasuyuki Inoe, a special effects art director of the movie. Inoue was born in Fukuoka in 1922, served as a soldier on the Chinese mainland during World War II, and lost his left foot in battle. After the war, he studied design and design at Nihon University College of Art under Bauhaus graduate Takeshi Yamawaki, and then under the direction of Tsuburaya, he was in charge of special art for the movie Godzilla, and after that he mastered the path. At the venue, storyboards, models, design materials, etc. of the movi...
