建部凌岱のことはこれまで全く知らなかった。
弘前藩の家老の家に生まれながら、故あって故郷を離れ、俳諧で名を為しながら、その後は絵師、随筆画、読み本作家、国学者として多方面に足跡を残した。
絵においては、彭城百川に俳画を学び、中津藩の支援を受けて長崎に留学して熊斐に南画を学び、または清から日本に渡った絵師から山水画を学んだ。
そうした様々なジャンルの絵が並んでいたが、一人の絵師が描いたとは思えないほど、全く技法がバラバラだった。
木村蒹葭堂に見せてもらったという、明代末の山水画帖を描き写したという画帖も展示されていた。
『本朝水滸伝』という読み本を書いたが、それは後に曲亭馬琴が読み本の祖とするほど大きな影響を与えた。
国学者としては、賀茂真淵の門下となり、京都や名古屋で『万葉集』や『伊勢物語』の講義を行ったという。
建部凌岱という人物は、江戸時代の黄金期と言える18世紀を、まるで体現しているかのような、実に興味深い人物だと感じた。
