根津美術館の蒔絵コレクションを展示した企画展。
蒔絵と言っても色々な工芸品があるが、今回は、蒔絵の硯箱、経箱、印籠、婚礼丁度品などが展示されていた。
やはり見所は、重要美術品が目白押しの煌びやかな硯箱の数々だった。
日本らしい花鳥風月や、古今和歌集に歌われた情景が、金粉などを使い驚異的なテクニックによって表現されていて、いつまでも見飽きないような小さな世界が、それぞれの蒔絵の硯箱に描かれていた。
花白河蒔絵硯箱は、足利義政が所有していたが、その後、江戸時代には松花堂昭乗の手にわたったという伝世の名品。
大阪の豪商が売りに出した際に、根津嘉一郎が高額で買取、根津の名前が一躍美術界に轟いたという。
印籠は江戸時代を代表する工芸品の一つだが、表面には蒔絵が描かれているものが多い。
小さなキャンバスに、ミニチュアールのような趣で様々なテーマが表現されていて、腰に下げられていたというそうした印籠が目に入ったら、当時の人々は思わずその美しさに見入ってしまっただろう。

There are various kinds of crafts in maki-e, but this time, maki-e inkstone cases, sutra boxes, inrō, wedding ceremony items, etc. were on display.
The highlight was the gorgeous inkstone case full of important works of art.
Scenes sung in ancient and modern waka poetry collections, as well as the natural beauty of Japan, were expressed with amazing techniques using gold powder, and small worlds that never got tired of being seen were drawn on each maki-e inkstone box.
The Hanashirakawa Maki-e Inkstone Case was owned by Ashikaga Yoshimasa, but is said to have been handed down to Shojo Shokado in the Edo period.
When a wealthy merchant in Osaka put it up for sale, it was bought by Kaichiro Nezu at a high price, and Nezu's name suddenly became known in the art world.
Inro is one of the representative crafts of the Edo period, and many of them have lacquer work painted on the surface.
Various themes were expressed in a miniature style on a small canvas, and people at the time would have been stunned by the beauty of the inro, which was hung from the waist.
