The Age of Ueno Three Monuments (Gunma Prefectural Museum of History)

In Gunma Prefecture, there are three stone monuments, the Yamanoue Monument, the Tago Monument, and the Kanaizawa Monument, which were placed from the 7th century to the 8th century.

This exhibition was held to commemorate the five years since they were registered in UNESCO's "Memory of the World."

Focusing on the 7th and 8th centuries, it was an exhibition with a grand theme that introduced the results of archeology not only in Gunma Prefecture, but also in Nara and the Tohoku region, where the Yamato Dynasty was established.

The three stone monuments were displayed as replicas, but I was able to see the characters carved on the surface. The stone monument tells the story of the people who built it and how it was built.

Stone monuments were often made in ancient China and still remain today. But they had not been in popular in Japan.

At the permanent exhibition venue, we were able to see giant clay figures and golden horse harnesses found in Gunma Prefecture, showing how the Gunma region was developed at the time.

This region, which was once called Ueno Province, was in an important position on the Tosando road heading northeast. At the venue, there were excavated items from Tagajo and Akita Castle, as well as exhibits that made us feel the relationship with Ezo, which was very interesting.

In the last corner, a collotype reproduction of the Takamatsuzuka Tumulus, which was made in the same era as the Ueno Sanhi, and a reproduction of the Shosoin Treasure were displayed.

Combined with the exhibits related to the three monuments in Ueno, I felt like I had slipped back in time to ancient Japan.

Shiomi Mieko + FLUXUS (TOKI-NO-WASUREMONO)

Works by Mieko Shiomi, who was active as a member of Fluxus, and other members of Fluxus were on display. Speaking of people from Fluxus from Japan, the name recognition of Yoko Ono is overwhelming. This was the first time I had seen Mieko Shiomi's work as a whole, but she had many unique works that were on a par with Yoko Ono, and it was worth seeing. Her idea of using the entire world as a stage, sending messages from various places to perform events and sharing the results, is very Fluxus-like. Also unique were t...

A special exhibition of the Makie collection of the Nezu Museum. There are various kinds of crafts in maki-e, but this time, maki-e inkstone cases, sutra boxes, inrō, wedding ceremony items, etc. were on display. The highlight was the gorgeous inkstone case full of important works of art. Scenes sung in ancient and modern waka poetry collections, as well as the natural beauty of Japan, were expressed with amazing techniques using gold powder, and small worlds that never got tired of being seen were drawn on each maki-e inkstone box. The Hanashirakawa Mak...

Yasuyuki "TAIKO" Inoue (Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo)

A retrospective exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Yasuyuki Inoe, a special effects art director of the movie. Inoue was born in Fukuoka in 1922, served as a soldier on the Chinese mainland during World War II, and lost his left foot in battle. After the war, he studied design and design at Nihon University College of Art under Bauhaus graduate Takeshi Yamawaki, and then under the direction of Tsuburaya, he was in charge of special art for the movie Godzilla, and after that he mastered the path. At the venue, storyboards, models, design materials, etc. of the movi...
