Passport to Shangri-la (Museum of Modern Art, Saitama)

The name of the exhibition is the unique name of Passport to Shangri-la, but the name made me want to go all the way across the Arakawa River to visit. The name is said to be taken from the name of Chie Matsui's work, which has also been exhibited at the exhibition. Artists of various genres were on display, treating the works of art as pass cards for visiting Tougenkyo. It was composed so that the works of Kansetsu Hashimoto, Shunso Hishida, Kishio Suga, Q Ei, Man Ray, etc., and the works of contemporary artists such as Chie Matsui and Miyu Inagaki confronted each other. I enjoyed watching each individual work, but unfortunately I didn't feel that the...

Shape of Atmosphere (Urawa Art Museum)

Although the word "atmosphere" is attached to the name of the exhibition, various works were exhibited that tried to express the feeling of atmosphere and atmosphere, which is difficult to express in a clear form. Tenshin Okakura's words, "Isn't there a way to depict the air?" are a fitting start for this exhibition. The works of Taikan Yokoyama, Shunso Hishida, Fujiko Nakaya, Yasuko Iba, Imosen Ogawa, Q Ei, Tatsuo Kawaguchi, and Isamu Wakabayashi, who tried to answer that question, were on display. Aside from the theme, it was...

fire & water (東京都写真美術館) PRIX PICTET Japan Award (Tokyo Photographic Art Museum)

PRIX PICTET Japan Award Exhibition of International Photography Awards on Photography and Sustainability. Works on various themes were on display, such as small grains of plastic, landscapes of snowy mountains that looked like models, the lives of people on remote islands, and majestic forms of nature. Sustainability is being addressed in a number of ways. Video has a great appeal, but the medium of photography, with its impressive images, makes us think about the state of the earth and its natural environment where we live.

Noguchi Rika: Small Miracles (Tokyo Photographic Art Museum)

I had seen Noguchi's work at some exhibition before. I don't remember exactly what kind of picture it was, but he remembers that it was a casual picture, yet very impressive. At this exhibition, I was able to see a large number of Noguchi's works. From an early age, Noguchi seems to have felt a mysterious power in the events around him. It is in no way like some unrealistic occult, but like a law or force in nature. Noguchi is trying to capture such “mysterious power” in his photographs and video works. After viewing this exhibition, I felt that such a mysterious power was hidden in my surroundings.

Beads in the World (Shoto Museum of Art)

This exhibition brings together beads from all over the world, centering on the collection of the National Museum of Ethnology in Osaka. I remember playing with beads on necklaces and bracelets when I was a kid. I also remembers that what I was using at the time was small glass or plastic colorful commercial beads. However, what was displayed at the venue was a truly diverse array of shells, fish bones, plants, and bird feathers. It was all about what I thought. From these beads around the world, I could feel the diversity of cultures and the richness of human imagination. Human beings will continue to make a variety of beads using various materials around them. I d...

Reproducing Words and Paintings During the Edo Period (Naritasan Museum of Calligraphy)

In the world of calligraphy and painting, by transferring the works of our predecessors, we have conveyed their essence to future generations and created new things from them. This exhibition presents calligraphy and painting works that have been transferred in line with the flow of time in the Edo period. Fujiwara no Teika's unique style of calligraphy, called Teika-yo, has been passed down to the Edo period. Ieyasu's copy of Teika's calligraphy gives us a glimpse of its spread. When publishing became popular in the early Edo period, books featuring the famous calligraphy of Fujiwara no Teika, Kukai, and Ono no Michikaze w...

Beauty Nurtured by The Tale of Genji (Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum)

Works created by contemporary artists on the theme of The Tale of Genji were on display. There are various genres such as calligraphy, crafts, and paintings. When we think of The Tale of Genji, the picture scrolls of The Tale of Genji from the late Heian period and Hatsune furnishings from the Edo period come to mind. The Tale of Genji, which Toshinari Fujiwara made a must-read for reading poetry, has influenced not only the world of waka but also various arts and crafts. In the Edo period, a reading material called Nisemurasaki Inaka Genji, which arranged the Tale of Genji, was published, and many ukiyo-e prints were produced from it. The Tale of Genji will continue to inspire many writers and artists.
