Genreless Kogei (National Crafts Museum)

The National Crafts Museum used to be located in Kitanomaru Park in Tokyo. It was a place I often visited by when I went to the National Museum of Modern Art in Takebashi.

It moved to Kanazawa and made a new start in the new world in 2020.

While feeling that I would like to visit once, I was finally able to visit this time.

The crafts museum in the Kitanomaru period was a renovated building with impressive red bricks that used to be the former Imperial Guard Division Headquarters building, but this new crafts museum also reuses the former army building in Kanazawa.

It is ironic that the former army building, which once destroyed countless buildings and crafts in various parts of Asia, especially China, continues to be used as a craft museum.

By the way, when I visited here, a collection exhibition called genreless crafts was being held.

Various crafts, such as pottery, glassware, and kimono, were exhibited in two corners: design and contemporary art.

The craftsmanship is diverse, and there are crafts that I can feel the individuality of various young craftsmen, such as Kenkichi Tomimoto, Kanjiro Kawai, Shoji Hamada, Simon Yotsuya, and Kimiyo Mishima, who are still active young craftsmen.

In one corner of the building, there is also a corner that reproduces the workshop of Gonroku Matsuda, a lacquer artist born in Ishikawa Prefecture, and I can feel the homage to the local legend.

Shiomi Mieko + FLUXUS (TOKI-NO-WASUREMONO)

Works by Mieko Shiomi, who was active as a member of Fluxus, and other members of Fluxus were on display. Speaking of people from Fluxus from Japan, the name recognition of Yoko Ono is overwhelming. This was the first time I had seen Mieko Shiomi's work as a whole, but she had many unique works that were on a par with Yoko Ono, and it was worth seeing. Her idea of using the entire world as a stage, sending messages from various places to perform events and sharing the results, is very Fluxus-like. Also unique were t...

A special exhibition of the Makie collection of the Nezu Museum. There are various kinds of crafts in maki-e, but this time, maki-e inkstone cases, sutra boxes, inrō, wedding ceremony items, etc. were on display. The highlight was the gorgeous inkstone case full of important works of art. Scenes sung in ancient and modern waka poetry collections, as well as the natural beauty of Japan, were expressed with amazing techniques using gold powder, and small worlds that never got tired of being seen were drawn on each maki-e inkstone box. The Hanashirakawa Mak...

Yasuyuki "TAIKO" Inoue (Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo)

A retrospective exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Yasuyuki Inoe, a special effects art director of the movie. Inoue was born in Fukuoka in 1922, served as a soldier on the Chinese mainland during World War II, and lost his left foot in battle. After the war, he studied design and design at Nihon University College of Art under Bauhaus graduate Takeshi Yamawaki, and then under the direction of Tsuburaya, he was in charge of special art for the movie Godzilla, and after that he mastered the path. At the venue, storyboards, models, design materials, etc. of the movi...
