Eifukuji Temple and Kamakura Gokenin (Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Cultural History)

Once upon a time, there was a huge temple called Eifuku-ji in the northeastern part of Kamakura.

It is said that Minamoto no Yoritomo built this temple after defeating the Fujiwara clan in Hiraizumi to bury the souls of those who died in the battle.

The temple seems to have been modeled after Minamoto no Yoritomo, who was surprised by the huge temples such as Chusonji and Motsuji that he saw in Hiraizumi.

At the venue, sutra mounds, roof tiles, pillars, etc. discovered during the excavation work were exhibited. There were also photographs of the site, but now there is no trace of it, and it does not look like there used to be a large temple there.

It is easy to imagine that the newly established Kamakura shogunate was modeled on Kyoto, the capital of Japan until then. However, it was a fresh surprise that Hiraizumi, which was founded by the Fujiwara clan, was also culturally influenced.

The Kamakura shogunate invited famous musicians from Kyoto to perform bugaku and other performances at temples such as Eifuku-ji Temple. It is said that it was also to convey the thoughts of Buddhism to the people in an easy-to-understand manner.

A dance face that is thought to have been used on such occasions was also on display. They look exactly like those stored in the Shosoin, and you can see that the tradition has been handed down as it is.

As research on Eifuku-ji Temple progresses in the future, it may be possible to gain a new understanding of what the Kamakura period looked like in the past.

Shiomi Mieko + FLUXUS (TOKI-NO-WASUREMONO)

Works by Mieko Shiomi, who was active as a member of Fluxus, and other members of Fluxus were on display. Speaking of people from Fluxus from Japan, the name recognition of Yoko Ono is overwhelming. This was the first time I had seen Mieko Shiomi's work as a whole, but she had many unique works that were on a par with Yoko Ono, and it was worth seeing. Her idea of using the entire world as a stage, sending messages from various places to perform events and sharing the results, is very Fluxus-like. Also unique were t...

A special exhibition of the Makie collection of the Nezu Museum. There are various kinds of crafts in maki-e, but this time, maki-e inkstone cases, sutra boxes, inrō, wedding ceremony items, etc. were on display. The highlight was the gorgeous inkstone case full of important works of art. Scenes sung in ancient and modern waka poetry collections, as well as the natural beauty of Japan, were expressed with amazing techniques using gold powder, and small worlds that never got tired of being seen were drawn on each maki-e inkstone box. The Hanashirakawa Mak...

Yasuyuki "TAIKO" Inoue (Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo)

A retrospective exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Yasuyuki Inoe, a special effects art director of the movie.
