Chinese Art Selection 3 (Osaka City Museum of Fine Art)

A collection of Chinese stone sculptures that was moved to the first floor and then collected by Kenshiro Yamaguchi. As soon as I entered the exhibition room, I was overwhelmed by the stone statues placed in the room. Most of them are from the Northern Wei, Northern Zhou, and Sui dynasties. Buddhism was introduced to China during the Northern Wei era. I feel that such stone statues show how people at that time accepted the new religion of Buddhism.

In the next corner, the works of Japanese painters who were influenced by Chinese calligraphy were exhibited.

The Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts, which will enter a long renovation period of three years from this fall, has released its proud Chinese art collection before that. The contents of the exhibition were mainly the Abe collection of Chinese calligraphy and the Yamaguchi collection of Chinese stone sculptures. Let's start with Chinese calligraphy. A sparse forest map of Ni Zan. Ni Zan was a latecomer to the original era, and his family was wealthy, so he wasn't involved in bureaucratic jobs. Many of the works had a simple composition, such as this picture, with trees growing on the banks of the pond and on the island, which had a great influence on posterity.

Buddhist Art of the Tendai School (Kyoto National Museum)

An exhibition that introduces Saicho and the Tendai sect, which started in Tokyo. After the event in Kyushu, the final venue, the Kyoto exhibition, has begun. The exhibits in this exhibition are quite different at each venue, incorporating the characteristics of the area in which they are held. This Kyoto has Enryakuji Temple, the head temple of the Tendai sect. Naturally, there were many exhibits from the Enryakuji Temple. I went to the Tokyo exhibition last October. About 6 months later, I was able to visit this Kyoto exhibition as well. Here are some of the exhibits that were exhibited only at the Kyoto exhibition that were memorable.

Salon Culture and the Pictorial Arts of Kyoto and Osaka (National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto)

Speaking of Kansai painters in the Edo period, the names of Kyoto painters such as Maruyama Okyo, Ito Jakuchu, and Ike no Taiga come to mind. However, there were many painters in Osaka as well. Since Tenshin Okakura did not appreciate these Osaka painters at all, they have been ignored in the academic world since the Meiji era. In recent years, there has been a lot of movement to re-evaluate such so-called Osaka painters. In this exhibition, based on overseas research, the works of Osaka Gakudan were exhibited and introduced on a large scale, centering on their relationship with Kyoto.

Traveling paintings (Sen-oku Hakukokan Museum)

An exhibition of Edo literary paintings with the theme of travel.  It was the first time in about two years that I visited this museum. I usually pick up a taxi from Jingu-Marutamachi Station in Keihan, but this time it was an exhibition related to traveling, so I walked from the station to the museum while looking at Kumano Shrine and Okazaki Shrine on my left. Most of the works on display were from the museum's collection, but some of them were exhibited at the History Museum in Izumisano City. Hine Taizan's "Kumano Kanko" is one such work, but it is said that it is a painting based on the experience th...

I didn't know about Pentti Sammallahti until now. He is said to be a Finnish photographer born in 1950. Many of the photographs on display were landscape photographs from all over the world, including Finland. The location is Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Russia, Egypt, India and so on. He also had photographs of Fukushima and Kyoto in Japan. As I looked at those pictures, I realized that I was trapped in a mysterious sensation. I have never visited those places, but I feels very nostalgic for some reason. From the pictures of the sea, I remembered the scen...
